Shallipopi
Planet Pluto - EP
Album · Afro-Beat · 2023 · Dapper Music & Entertainment
Shallipopi had a whirlwind year in 2023. “Elon Musk”, his breakout single, had scarcely soared to its full potential when detention by the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission threatened to disrupt his trajectory. Since his release late in June, Shallipopi (born Crown Uzama) moved to recenter attention to the unique lyrical style, breezy melody, and supersized charm that made “Elon Musk” an unmissable hit and party favorite across West Africa. A series of remixes for the track with Afropop stars Zlatan and Fireboy DML, as well as support from Olamide and Wizkid, bolstered Shallipopi’s standing and expanded his reach.
On his debut project, Shallipopi continues to embrace his upward trajectory while paying homage to his origins. Planet Pluto is a groovy statement of intent from a star who’s still determined to do things his own way as he makes a joyful mélange of trap, soul, Afrobeat, and highlife that’s bound together by his joie de vivre. “Obapluto,” interpolating the Osemwegie Ebohon Theatre International Troupe’s “Oba Ovonramwen,” peels at the layers of Shallipopi’s artistry, revealing an acute appreciation for heritage. “Speedometer,” meanwhile, is a trippy amalgam of amapiano and Afrobeats. In other places, the singer’s knack for inventive songwriting shines through: “Melanin Touch” is a smooth promise to satisfy a love interest that eases into “Ahead Ahead,” a cursory glance at his past with a promise to keep striving—and winning.
