For just a three-piece, Super American Eagle really kicks up a dense, unruly racket. Of course, it helps that the Melbourne power trio features quite seasoned players in drummer/singer Brent DeBoer (The Dandy Warhols), bassist Dave Mudie (Courtney Barnett), and guitarist Bob Harrow (Immigrant Union). Together they pay extended homage to heavy psych and stoner rock from decades past, all while incorporating enough precision and invention to refresh the familiar dankness. You might hear visceral flashbacks to Motörhead, Black Sabbath, MC5, and even Led Zeppelin—thanks to DeBoer’s scenery-chewing vocals—but there’s always some extra surprise waiting in that thick shag carpet of fuzz. While the first half of this debut album establishes the band’s knack for intense, low-slung repetition, the second half snakes out into weirder realms. Riding an overdriven groove, “Youf Uck” almost completely obscures DeBoer’s impish growl. “Mark of the Beast” revels in its own primordial drag, while “Trampling” adopts acoustic guitars for a lighter and sweeter take on druggy 1960s vibes. And the epic closer “Mac” shows just how well the members of Super American Eagle lock into place, providing enough melodic richness to sustain a saturated psych trip complete with yidaki.
