A lot has changed for the exclamation point-obsessed rapper Autumn! since he unveiled his breakthrough EP, Solitary, back in 2020. He signed a record deal with Victor Victor worldwide, home of the dearly departed Pop Smoke, and helped pioneer the rap subgenre pluggnB. The style relies on heavy synths, booming bass, and R&B-infused vocals. Alongside his Slayworld crew, Autumn! became the face of the genre. On his 2024 follow-up to the influential project, the Lafayette, Louisiana-born rapper examines the scope of his influence and celebrates the small joys that make life worth living. “Where Yo Cash At!” loops triumphant, Atlanta-inspired horns before twinkling synths, layers of vocals, and twisted hi-hats turn the song into a narcotized meditation on life’s blessings. Autumn! sings, buoyed by heavy doses of Auto-Tune, “I’m really up as fuck, it really ain’t shit to be mad at.” On “Balmain & Self Healing!” he taps into his plugg roots and shares his mantra: “Looked myself in the mirror and said, ‘Boy, you gon’ shine today.’”
