Don Glori
Paper Can't Wrap Fire
Album · Contemporary R&B · 2025
A true multihyphenate, Gordon Li is a composer, producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist who performs and records as Don Glori. After distinguishing himself as a versatile bassist and bandleader in Melbourne’s jazz and funk circles, Li relocated to London and now broadens his horizons even more on his third album. The jazz focus of his earlier releases gives way to more soul and R&B here, with Li’s former touring band gracefully supporting this new direction along with a revolving cast of guest vocalists. Singer M.L. Hall lends real warmth to the horn flutters and snappy percolation of “Brown Eyes,” which swims off into a dreamy extended bridge before returning to its groove. Other guests include Brazilian percussionist Alcides Neto, who adds hints of samba to the eight-minute odyssey “Precious” and the frisky “Ron Song.” Connecting the dots between certain eras of David Axelrod and more modern performers like Jordan Rakei, Li crafts a musical voyage that’s smooth and funky to the ear yet also consistently inventive. Named for a Chinese proverb about how we can’t deny the truth, Paper Can’t Wrap Fire is all about seeking out what’s actually at the source of things.
