Album · Hip-Hop/Rap · 2025 · Anolabex (Pty) Ltd
Released almost exactly 10 years after his debut album, 2015’s Family Values, and three years after his passing in February 2022, Boss Zonke Forever (2025) is a celebration of the extraordinary life and legacy of South African hip-hop megastar Riky Rick. Throughout his career, the rapper, producer, composer, actor, and fashion icon born Rikhado Makhado dedicated himself to authentic South African rap, fusing stories of life’s highs and heartaches and meditations on familial love with sleek, high-end production. Songs like “Murdah” and “Stay Shining” showcased his love of classic kwaito beats, while blistering verses on “Amantombanze (Remix)” and “Boss Zonke” offered a view into a wordsmith at the top of his game. The star became a passionate advocate and ambassador for South African’s next-gen stars, establishing opportunities for creatives of all kinds by founding and curating Cottonfest, the music festival-cum-cultural phenomenon that fuses hip-hop, street culture, fashion, and art. Continuing Riky’s mission to “do it for the culture,” some of his most frequent collaborators worked alongside his family to compile an album brimming with Riky’s love of storytelling and community-building. Across Boss Zonke Forever’s 17 tracks, stars including Cassper Nyovest, Elaine, 25K, Blxckie, Focalistic, Dee Koala, Gemini Major, and Nia Pearl carry the torch with the same meticulousness for which Riky became known. On the Lusanda-assisted “Higher Power,” Riky’s verses and voice notes combine to narrate his personal journey and musical career, offering insight into the challenges he faced—and the resilience and faith it took to overcome them. With almost hymn-like energy, “Rain On Me” serves to inspire and uplift, as vocals from Lloyiso, Aubrey Qwana, and Lucille Slade carry a message of perseverance and faith, and encourage us to find the blessing within the storm. Yet it’s the poignant solo tracks included here that showcase the raw honesty and wisdom of both man and artist. He reflects on life’s trials on “Never Let Me Down,” navigating the solitary nature of success, the disappointment of betrayal, and how material possessions often don’t make up for the unpredictability of human relationships. Album highlight “Cishe Ngaposta” provides an overarching theme song to the character of Boss Zonke—the man, the music, and the legacy—and serves as a manifesto for the bold and extravagant persona that became one of South African hip-hop’s brightest stars. With assists from 25K, Focalistic, Blxckie, K.Keed, Blue Pappi, and Lowfeye, the street anthem captures both the wisdom and the unapologetic high-life energy that Riky Rick epitomizes—now and forever.
