Among those youthful yet skilled modern day practitioners of the dancefloor-primed style is Luis Figueroa, a Marc Anthony mentee who clearly understands how to balance the classic with the contemporary. Some four years after his impressive full-length Canciones del Alma, the singer shares an EP-length effort that artfully epitomizes what the sound has to offer listeners today. Well-crafted songs like “No Se Van (Ganas)” employ anticipatory openings that would otherwise invite a dembow thump, but instead unleash irresistible island polyrhythms. Naturally, he leans into the romantic bona fides of his chosen genre, making the yearning behind “Más Que Un Beso” all but tangible. The sole feature here comes from Figueroa’s fellow salsa sensation Christian Alicea, who adds his own undeniable flair to the standout duet “Si Llamas.”
