Given her multihyphenate success across television, fashion, and entrepreneurship, it’s easy to see why Dannhauser-born DJ Zinhle hasn’t released a full-length album since her 2009 debut, Feminine Touch. But while albums may have taken a back seat, a steady stream of singles and commanding performances kept her name ringing in all the right places for well over a decade. With ZEE Nation Volume 1, the Zee Nation Fest founder proves she hasn’t missed a beat. Sonically, the album explores a spectrum of moods and textures. Robust percussion and panned shakers bounce atop infectious 3-step grooves, while songs like “Pepe Remix,” driven by gqom’s buzzing synths, and closer “Sweet Guluva”—where hypnotic chants weave through powerful melodies and throbbing synths—affirm a curator who remains tapped in, her ear ever to the street. The cover art, a collage of real faces from her loyal fanbase, the Zee Nation, was collected during the album’s rollout campaign. That same spirit runs through the features and producers: a blend of rising voices like Sindi Nkosazana, Sfundo, and NDLOH JNR, and established names such as Thabsie, Mthunzi, Nana Atta, and Brenden Praise. That sense of community is everywhere, and the work of Zinhle’s musical and life partner MÖRDA likewise adds a distinct layer of chemistry, shaping an album grounded in intimacy and collective spirit.
