day2k, the artistic alias David Navarrete adopted to relaunch his musical career in 2023, has developed an aesthetic universe that is difficult to decode yet deeply intimate and full of soul. On his debut album, MAYDAY, the Tijuana-born artist takes that formula to the next level, shifting from neo-soul to ballad to breakbeat within a single song. This new fruit from the vibrant tree of Mexican alternative music reveals a clear hip-hop influence that, unlike his previous projects PLUG. (2023) and idek (2024), does not materialize through 16-bar verses or riding an 808. This time, he restores value to sampling and experiments with chops and deformations that amplify the album’s aura, while writing in abstract, nonlinear verse patterns.
