Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have been racking up milestones since releasing their 2024 debut album, I Love You, including touring with Pearl Jam in America and Australia and becoming the first all-female and nonbinary band to score an ARIA for Best Breakthrough Artist. Not bad for an ensemble that formed when its members were still in the first half of their teen years. GLORY beefs up the Melbourne/Canberra quartet’s sound to match their growing stature, with London-based producer Catherine Marks (boygenius, Wolf Alice) decamping to the Central Coast of New South Wales to add more muscle and polish to these punky indie-rock anthems. Pop-friendly effects and shouted group vocals bolster “BALCONY,” which sees singer/guitarist Anna Ryan breezily instruct the song’s subject to break up with their boyfriend. “BAIT” is equally snide, test-driving the POV of a man with an overbearing ego—complete with hollow “player” and “game” slogans. The Jean Teasers also employ rumbling reverb and vivid imagery on the slow-then-fast standout “MOTHER,” without couching their defiant feminist attitude (“And I shall not suffer a holy man’s crusade”). From top to bottom, this album proves to be a natural leveling-up for the band.
