Jake Banfield
Open Bars
Album · Country · 2025
Jake Banfield is part of a small but growing contingent of country artists looking to early-2000s pop and hip-hop for inspiration, for a kind of post-bro country that keeps the party vibe of its predecessor while unironically embracing seemingly disparate genres like dance and R&B. He’s got the chops to back those sounds up, as before pursuing his own country career in earnest he was a pen-for-hire for pop artists like Madison Beer and Little Mix. On this full-length debut, Banfield shows off his range as a writer and solo performer. Opening track “Anywhere but Home” is short but potent, with Banfield adopting a sung-spoken delivery that recalls Walker Hayes or Sam Hunt. “Lasso” is a mid-aughts club banger, while “Sunburn” is a charming throwback with a laidback hip-hop beat. Banfield even raps on “What She Want,” a song that eschews country entirely in favor of gauzy production and a trap beat. RaeLynn is the lone guest on the album, joining for the breakup ballad “Still Feels the Same.”
