Meghan Patrick goes big and bold on this fourth album, which follows the award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter’s 2021 release, Heart on My Glass. The Juno- and CCMA-winning artist pulls together her eclectic set of influences—she once played in a funk band and formally studied opera—for a country sound all her own, one with a reverence for traditional production and instrumentation and a forward-thinking appreciation of pop hooks. Patrick’s masterful voice and narrative sense of songwriting ground the project, and the record really gives a sense of her range, as she moves from a full-bodied belt to a gentle lilt—often on the same track—with preternatural ease. Highlights on the album include opening track “Blood from a Stone,” a Trisha Yearwood-esque ballad about heartbreak and hard-earned wisdom, and “Other Side of 25,” a relatable and compassionate reflection on the messiness of your mid-twenties. Country artist and pen-for-hire Caitlyn Smith (Rascal Flatts, Miley Cyrus) joins Patrick on “Stoned Alone,” a swaggering, sultry ode to the magical act of sparking a J by oneself instead of wasting energy on someone with a “bad attitude.” On this extended edition, Patrick adds a half dozen new tunes, starting with “Jessica, Jezebel,” a rollicking, rowdy account of a home-wrecking woman who “puts ol’ Jolene to shame.” “Project” is a winking takedown of a fixer-upper of a romantic partner, likening a two-timing man to “a Camaro on blocks.” Patrick gets vulnerable on “Safe Place to Break,” a soulful ballad that shows off her powerful voice. And on closer “Hold On Meg,” Patrick gives herself a hard-earned pep talk while reveling in music’s power to create connection.
