Richard Buckner
Dents and Shells
Album · Rock · 2004 · Merge Records
With its images of “brakelights showing” and other beacons in the night, “A Chance Counsel” opens Richard Buckner’s 2004 album with a wee-hours scene of emotional desolation. Yet as lonely as it is in that darkness, it’s also a comfort zone for the alt-country maverick. Over 10 songs that explore the end of his marriage to his former drummer, Penny Jo Buckner, he shifts between feelings of weary resignation and ache-filled wistfulness, landing somewhere in between for “Her,” the album’s stirring centerpiece.
