Aysanabee became a Juno-award-winning sensation in Canada thanks to his balance of soul-stirring indie-folk songcraft and festival-sized art-rock ambition, but for this EP, he revisits six of his signature tracks from an acoustic/piano vantage. That said, when you’re blessed with a voice as rich and resonant as Aysanabee’s, even a downsizing effort can’t help but still sound huge. These versions of fan favorites like “Nomads” and “Somebody Else” may begin as stripped-down, strummed-out serenades, but the cavernous production—with ghostly backing harmonies, heart-thumping percussion, and otherworldly textures swirling in the mix—affirms that Timelines isn’t so much an unplugged back-to-basics move as an attempt to present these songs as modern spirituals, intimate and transcendent in equal measure.
