Jimmie Dale Gilmore & The Flatlanders
Unplugged
Album · Country · 1995 · Sun Records
Lubbock, TX, supergroup-in-retrospect The Flatlanders were years ahead of the alt-country curve when they cut their little-heard debut album in 1972. Originally released only on 8-track, those songs are gathered here along with some extra bonus cuts, demonstrating Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, and lead singer Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s roots-conscious country music. Casually otherworldly songs like “Tonight I Think I’m Gonna Go Downtown” and “Dallas” combine post-Dylan lyrics with folky, acoustic instrumentation, with some singing saw thrown in the mix for added earthy weirdness.
