The Hands, formed at Evergreen College in Olympia, Washington, play with a fraternal cohesion that’s classic punk rock. Much like the early Goo Goo Dolls, the Figgs and other Stones-Replacements influenced groups, the Hands keep things constantly moving. The quietest moments are fleeting and they nearly always explode into a wall of distorted guitar that bury, blend or beat the vocals into submission. (There’s a piano hidden in here that finally makes itself felt on the folk-chanty “Wade in the Water,” where not so coincidentally the singer can also be heard legibly over the blasting din.) Fans of loud, powerful guitar rock have plenty to admire. “Praying Hands Will Make Fists,” “Six Gun Hand” and “Lies Lies Lies” snarl with a passion for ‘70s hard rock, Johnny Thunders style. This recalls those albums from the ‘70s that came with the instructions to play the record LOUD.
