On their 1997 debut album, the Glasgow post-rockers Mogwai stretch the genre's limits, pushing their hypnotic, dirge-like instrumental rave-ups to seven, 12, and even 16 minutes. “Yes! I Am a Long Way from Home” sets a deceptively dulcet tone—chiming guitars, major chords—before “Like Herod” explodes into a full-metal meltdown. The epic “Mogwai Fear Satan” perfects their balance of contrasting dynamics, with muted bass-and-drums interludes giving way to soaring passages of overdriven guitar and pummeling drums. Rock doesn’t get much more cathartic.
