We Can Fly, Vols. 1-5
Album · Psychedelic · 2011
This amazing 2011 collection mixes '60s freakbeat, mod pop, garage rock, Dutch R&B, and proto-psychedelia into one groovy melting pot. We Can Fly generously gathers a voluminous 126 tracks of go-go goodness. And what better way to set the tone for such an ambitious package than with The Penny Peeps’ “Model Village?” This freakbeat five-piece from Sussex, England, sounds like its members listened to The Move’s “I Can Hear the Grass Grow” and decided to form an entire band rooted in that one song. Other outstanding cuts here include “That’s What I Want,” a pivotal song for The Smoke, which was veering away from psych-pop and inching toward hard rock. And long before Murray Head had a hit with “One Night in Bangkok,” he released the elegant baroque pop tune “She Was Perfection,” which took its cues from The Left Banke. Terry Reid’s mellow, folk-rocking “Fires Alive” may give some insight as to why he'd later turn down the offer to sing for Led Zeppelin.
