I Love (Tom T. Hall's Songs of Fox Hollow)
Album · Singer/Songwriter · 2011
Tom T. Hall had a knack for crafting plainspoken stories that nonetheless contained canny observations about the sometimes-discomfiting realities of American life. Songs of Fox Hollow was an album of children’s songs written to explain farm life to Hall’s two young nephews and was a surprise success upon its 1974 release. Red Beet Records’ I Love (Tom T. Hall’s Songs of Fox Hollow) is a tribute to this beloved album, featuring interpretations of Hall’s songs by a host of distinguished performers. Some, like Bobby Bare, are old friends of Tom T. Hall, while others, like the young singer/songwriters Patty Griffin and Gary Bennett, were children themselves when Songs of Fox Hollow was released. I Love benefits from expertly played, eminently tasteful instrumentation from Nashville veterans, like pedal-steel virtuoso Lloyd Green and guitar legend Duane Eddy. Few of the interpretations here differ significantly from Hall’s original renditions, but I Love nonetheless provides a chance to introduce a new generation of young listeners to these classic works of country songcraft.
