Hank Williams III played bass in Superjoint Ritual and drums in Arson Anthem with Pantera’s Phil Anselmo and has led his own hardcore, doom-metal band, Assjack, so it’s not a surprise that on a day when he releases three albums, one of them is in the spirit of pounding metal. (The others released simultaneously are the hard country and experimental trips of Ghost to a Ghost / Gutter Town and the “Cattle Core” of Cattle Callin.) Williams plays and produces everything here. As a result, the intensity is singular. All the instruments are played in determination of one goal: complete annihilation. The diamond-hard shriek and pound of “Bend,” the slithering snake-to-Sabbath blues of “Camouflage,” the eerie command of “Livin’ Beyond Doom” are done with complete authority. “Get Str8” is practically poppy by comparison, picking up the tempo and bringing forth a melody that can nearly be sung. Williams’ vocal manipulations make things even crazier. This isn’t outlaw country music. This is outlaw metal.
