Storm the Gates of Heaven
Album - Alternative, Music, Punk, New Wave
Wayne County & The Electric Chairs were pretty prolific in 1978 when they released an EP and two full-length albums. Storm the Gates of Heaven was the band’s third long-player, and from the spooky intro and go-go guitar riff that kicks off the opening title track, it’s obvious they were listening to '60s psychedelic garage punk. “Speed Demon” similarly plays with revved-up three-chord guitar riffs, which are distorted and pumped through old surf-tone amplifiers. The heavy-handed rhythms pound out relentlessly, like late-'60s Motor City proto-punk as androgynous singer Wayne County spits out ferocious lyrics. “Mr. Normal” rocks out with more solid-state amplifier tones and herky-jerky, post-punk leanings. “Man Enough To Be a Woman” ushers in new wavy synthesizers, while Wayne County muses on the kind of transgender fantasies that would soon come to fruition in 1980 upon returning from Berlin as the reborn Jayne County.
