Over 17 albums in about as many years, British-born Holly Golightly has produced a consistently strong run of garage rock, punk, and rockabilly. She sticks to her gritty, stripped-down roots on Sunday Roll Me Over while moving deeper into country territory. She's joined here by the one-man band Lawyer Dave (a.k.a. The Brokeoffs), and the two of them blend gospel, boogie, country blues, and honky tonk with exuberance, charm, and righteous close harmonies. It’s their seventh release together, and they've learned how to lock into a raw, gutbucket groove. Handclaps, tambourine, and slide guitar drive the edgy opener “Goddamn Holy Roll.” “They Say” is a mesmerizing slide drone, “Tank” is anchored by a blazing electric guitar riff, and “One for the Road” is a woozy sing-along waltz. The three cover tunes are dynamite: a country chestnut that they turn on its head (“we need a whole less of Jesus and a lot more rock 'n' roll”), a raucous version of the Mac Davis chuckler “Hard to be Humble,” and an unexpectedly tender take on The Davis Sisters’ “I Forgot More.”
