Veronica Mortensen
Catching Waves
Album · Jazz · 2013
For her fourth album, this talented Danish vocalist/songwriter offers 12 originals with her working trio and special guest trumpeter Peter Asplund. Veronica Mortensen, like Rebecca Martin and Theo Bleckmann, is as much a lyricist and composer as a singer: “Enjoy the Ride” is a relaxingly swinging empowerment statement that avoids lyrical clichés, while the funky electro-acoustic “This Might Not Be Cool” serves as a mission statement with lyrics such as “This might not be jazz/The way you think it should/But hey, it works for me!” Mortensen’s effortless storytelling skills shine in “Simple Sense of Being,” which features a mellifluous extended solo by pianist Mads Brentzen; “This Is Not a Love Song” impressively recalls the emotional gravitas of Bernard Ingher’s “Everything Must Change.” Bassist Kristordsgaard’s nimble solo is the secret weapon on “Beneath the Sun,” while drummer Anton Eger’s crisp timekeeping fuels the exuberant closing track, “Don’t Say a Word Now.”
