Anthony Naples
Smacks
Album · Electronic · 2015 · ANS
Anthony Naples' third EP for his Proibito label sets aside the gauzy downbeat sketches of his Body Pill LP in favor of body-moving deep house: heavy kicks, hard-edged drum programming, and buzzing, richly colored synths. Moodymann's influence informs the disco loops and jazzy keys of "Smacks" and "Zitronen"; "Bonobo" and "Dopes to Infinity (4DM)" explore darker atmospheres and more muted tones, though they still sizzle once they get going. The title track's unexpected final two minutes make for a heady hidden track full of thump and swirl.
