After a long absence, the Canadian R&B king reclaims the throne.
Glenn Lewis is like the Halley’s Comet of Canadian R&B—he doesn’t come around often, but it’s memorable when he does. Since the release of his star-making 2002 debut World Outside My Window, Lewis’ career has been defined by decade-long absences and surprising comebacks.
Overture is Lewis’ first album in more than 10 years and just his third overall, but those long gaps ultimately reinforce the timelessness of his neo-soul aesthetic, in full bloom on the irresistibly smooth “G.Y.A.M.L. (My Love).” However, with 16 tracks clocking in at an hour, Overture unfurls a vast canvas that spans the vintage Stevie Wonder vibes of “Impressions,” the lo-fi indie-R&B guitar shimmer of “Jaded,” and the old-time Hollywood orchestral grandeur of “Say You Will.”
And while Lewis’ voice remains an ageless wonder, the reflective songwriting heard on heart-rending hymns like “Father to Son” and “Last Goodbye” convey the sort of wisdom that can only come with age.
