The “WYA” singer refines his boundary-shifting sound.
Having broken out a few years prior with the hit single “WYA” and its subsequent remixes, J Abdiel delivers his most substantial project to date with 2017. Specializing in melodic, R&B-informed variants of reggaetón and trap, the Puerto Rican singer refines his boundary-shifting sound across these eight tracks, more often than not in collaboration with other artists of note, including Ankhal and El Ciego y El Goldo.
He couches his thoroughly modern themes in mood-setting, at times atmospheric instrumentals as on the subtly arranged solo single “Volver” and the near ambient “Oklnd” with Dimeeeak. Producer OKEIFLOU lends Abdiel a booming bass for the discreet hookup paean “Okei,” while Reelian unleashes the contemporary Chilean reggaetón wave for him on the like-minded, down-low oriented “Am Pm.” Later, he bolsters his hip-hop bona fides on “Bandita,” joined by TORRRES and Tutu for the erotically explicit cut imbued with slight drill touches.
