Corridos become tales of valor via the songwriter’s lyrical talents.
Arriving a few short months after Dualidad, his joint mini-album with Grupo Marca Registrada, the full-length FROSTY recenters Jasson Arellano as a redoubtable corridos soloist. Motivated by money and all that comes with it, these primarily first-person narratives paint evocative pictures via his voluble lyrics from the 420-friendly and accordion-laced title track onwards.
Through his words, images of hustling hard and reaping the benefits like “BAKERS” and “K1” feel like extraordinary tales of valor, the triumph of persistence in the face of adversities both told and untold. Some, like “SIN RASTRO,” provide brazenly detailed accounts of illicit activities, while others including “LONESTAR” benefit from a certain humility.
Still, while the overwhelming majority of these tracks concern themselves with standing on business, penultimate pair “SOLO TU” and “DONDE ESTÁ EL AMOR?” diverge from such themes to allow Arellano’s romantic side an opportunity to show itself. Yet once started-from-the-bottom closer “NINE TWO” hits, he’s back on the lucrative path of morally gray righteousness.
