On previous albums, even when he’s working with other producers and artists from the West Coast, Blu has largely molded LA in his own image. He uses soul samples, beat scene mavericks, his own production, and everything in between, rapping about experiences that were both hyper-specific to his hood and universally applicable. Alongside Oakland-bred producer Sndtrak, he completely leans into the aesthetic of West Coast rap that most fans associate with the region—and he’s just as good at it as the legends he’s paying homage to.

Blu takes on thick g-funk basslines, alien synths, and a smorgasbord of blink-or-you’ll-miss-it LA rap samples, flooding them with vivid, acrobatic bars about the city’s storied gang culture, lowriders, and aspirations of wealth through music and sports, with cameos by fellow West Coast lyricists like ICECOLDBISHOP, Thurz, and Cashus King (the latter appears on nearly half of the album’s 10 tracks).

The album is thematically taut while still being emotionally dynamic: “L.A.” and “D OGs” capture bullet-whizzing chaos, “Sunshine” is celebratory cruising music, and conceptual closer “Jesus” imagines the Messiah returning to LA with Chucks, jewels, and a strap in tow for a classic West Coast party.

The occasion is joyful, even with a wince of sadness: Everyone attending isn’t heaven-bound, and the goal of the party, as stated in the chorus, “Give Him a good time that He’ll never forget/So this time, He won’t leave ever again.” If Blu’s love for his city somehow isn’t clear through his vivid recollections or attention to such complex flows, he states it plainly in an outro poem of “Sunshine.” “Bloodshed or beauty…there’s nothing you can ever say to us to ever shake our love for the city of Los Angeles.”
