Childhood friends Tracy Sawyer and Corin Tucker were one of the riot grrrl era’s defining acts as Heavens to Betsy, whose sparse instrumentation—lead vocalist Tucker played guitar, while Sawyer held down the drums and occasionally bass—and shifting rhythms put Tucker’s mighty wail front and center. That bare-bones, visceral sound placed pain, anger, and righteousness at the heart of their music, a tangle of feelings that turned songs like the menstrual-shame plaint “my red self” and the frenemy ode “Me & Her” into spotlights on young womanhood’s travails.
Heavens to Betsy broke up in 1994 after releasing their only full-length Calculated, with Tucker forming the feminist punk trailblazer Sleater-Kinney and Sawyer playing in cult-beloved acts like Flying Tigers and The Lies. They reformed for a tour in 2026 and commemorated it with this compilation, which collects a previously unreleased demo recorded by Bratmobile’s Molly Neuman in 1992 as well as two 7-inches.
