“It is the finality/In this, my reality/My new reality,” Niniola concedes on “Pain,” the opener of her Without You EP. The song is a harrowing account of the life-altering visit to the hospital that reset the powerhouse singer’s understanding of both love and loss. “I was feeling his spirit beside me/When I told him to go/Told him to go back to his body immediately,” she sings, pushing against the presence of death.

The finality of mortality casts a long shadow over “Raining (O Dun Mi),” as well. Here, the singer oscillates between spiritual acceptance—recognizing her partner is “in a better place”—and the visceral, day-to-day agony of a broken heart. Her anguish unfolds over intricate, interlocking percussion, building toward a cathartic crescendo powered by swelling strings, crashing cymbals, and impassioned background vocal fills.

On “Teardrops,” she channels personal sorrow into universal counsel: “This life, it not balanced/This life, it’s not promised/Live today like it’s your last,” she sings. The record closes with “Somebody’s Baby,” an exploration of loneliness not as an abstract concept, but as the sudden, jarring void left in a space once defined by companionship. Driven by clipped, syncopated rhythms and a melancholic keyboard motif, the track reaches its emotional peak as backing vocals echo Niniola’s yearning plea: “I’m lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely/Need your hands to navigate.”
