In the five years since Joyce Wrice released her debut full-length Overgrown, the Los Angeles-based soul singer has gained a lot of wisdom—and left behind wallowing in heartbreak. “I could be someone you love,” she declares on her second album’s streetscape-set introduction, and the buoyant song that follows, “Fly (Someone You Love),” puts Wrice’s confidence on full display, her flirtations explicit and playful over strutting drums and thudding bass.

From there, Wrice pairs her love of classic R&B with her grown-woman desires, daring a flame to “keep up with me now” on the roller-funk confection “Dangerous,” reveling in newfound chemistry on the stretched-out slow jam “Crack the Code,” and darting through the skittering drums of the hypnotic “Until Next Time.”

Guests like Mack Keane (on the ballad “On Time”) and JID (on “Catch Me If You Can”) serve as duet partners, making Wrice’s talents as a songwriter and singer shine even more brightly.
