Ellie Goulding has spent 15 years approaching dance-pop from all possible angles—dreamy folktronica, club-ready synth-pop, world-crushing EDM bangers. On 2023’s Higher Than Heaven, the singer-songwriter spoke of eschewing personal narrative in favor of meticulously crafted electro-pop perfection with universal themes of romantic bliss. The pendulum swung the other way on her sixth album, I Know Too Much—a return to personal songwriting on which Goulding stops being polite and starts getting real.
The 39-year-old stripped back the club euphoria of hits like 2023’s “Miracle” and, instead, wore her heart on her sleeve, getting bittersweet and specific over toxic relationships past. “You know every single button to press/Only you could call me trashy in my black Prada dress,” she sings over classical strings on lead single “Black Prada Dress,” while tracks like “Always Think of You” and “Misremember You” find Goulding nursing her wounds over moody guitar chords.
The singer-songwriter has said she wrote around 50 songs for the record and, only two days after I Know Too Much’s release, she unveiled We Know Too Much, a deluxe edition featuring six more of them. They feature the piercing lyricism and raw feeling that powered much of I Know Too Much and are fueled by a sense of experimentation and ambition. There’s rocky rage on “Right Hand” and gut-punching lines on "Nice Things” with the intensity reaching peak on “Ways to Hurt.” Made with MIKE DEAN, it begins not unlike a Christine and the Queens track and grows into the album’s most hypnotic, emotionally charged moment.
But even if Goulding moves away from the dance floor, redemption is still found on it, as on “Ravers,” a bit of sweaty house catharsis on which she promises a partner to be “ravers until we die.”
