Holly Golightly
All Her Fault
Album · Alternative · 2014
Holly Golightly’s extensive catalog tells the tale of an uncompromising musician who sticks to her love of the raw, natural sounds of blues, country, and early rock ’n’ roll, where performances are everything. With the help of her one-man backing band (Lawyer Dave is The Brokeoffs), she’s made a number of her best records, of which 2014’s All Her Fault qualifies handily. Yet this album was also her most difficult album to complete. The duo, living on their Georgia farm outside Athens, dealt with an onslaught of unpredictable summer thunderstorms that made it impossible to comfortably record sessions in their home studio/barn. Power outages and floods threatened the loss of their work in a flash, so clear-weather forecasts were essential when committing to sessions that came after their day jobs and looking after horses. These considerations focused their energies and forced them to think more carefully about the songs and their arrangements. The joyous “Bless Your Heart” and a purebred cover of Richard M. Jones’ “Trouble in Mind” are solid evidence that it was worth the extra trouble.
