Drivin N Cryin
Great American Bubble Factory
Album · Rock · 2009
Singer Kevin Kinney of Drivin’ N Cryin found himself a solo career as a modern-day folksinger, but he never looked to give up the classic- rock backing he heard on all his favorite records. The band’s neo-classic brand of rock ‘n’ roll never goes out of style and a song like “I See Georgia,” with its standard guitar solos and lead-singer swagger, sounds as if it had always existed. This timeless approach is all over Great American Bubble Factory, where Kinney addresses his modern day concerns about a country that even imports its bubbles from China. Growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and relocating to Atlanta, Kinney knows of the heartland of which he speaks. The regrets of “Midwestern Blues” are real, even if Kinney escaped the factory life for a better one steeped in music. The Stonesy growl of “Let Me Down” answers his existential questions with a howl of the guitar. The cover of the Dictators’ “I Stand Tall” represents the inner smile and resolve Kinney hopes to bring out in all those his music touches.
