Featuring two key figures in Los Angeles's Paisely Undergound of the 1980s, Opal was essentially Kendra Smith (of the Dream Syndicate) and Dave Roback (of the Rain Parade). The band perfected an updated version of the folk rock and psychedelia that defined their city during the 1960s. Opal release a series of singles and EPs before the famed punk label SST issued the band's only full-length, HAPPY NIGHTMARE BABY, in 1987. Smith left the band during the tour for that album, and Roback joined up with Hope Sandoval to form Mazzy Star shortly after.
