Despite not having been afforded the full credit his input deserved, Tater Tate is argubaly the best all-round fiddler ever to have played in bluegrass music. Parlaying an amazing ability to play stringed instruments as a child, the legendary bluegrass journeyman made his radio debut (playing guitar, oddly enough) in 1940. In 1946, he joined Jim Smith’s Ridge Runners and turned his attention more to the instrument that would make him famous, though he also played bass, banjo, and mandolin for the Runners. From the 1950s to the '70s, Tate played with a host of top notch country and bluegrass musicians, including the Bailey Brothers, Bill Monroe, and Red Smiley’s Bluegrass Cut-Ups. In the late '70s, Tate joined Lester Flatt’s Nashville Grass, before rejoining Bill Monroe in the mid 1980s.
