Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.
I had my first solo in church when I was about 3 years old. The children's choir sang from the balcony and the choir director didn't know if I'd be visible over the bannister because I was so short, but I lead the song nonetheless!
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular?
Kanye West, The College Dropout
Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
OutKast, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
I wanted to make people experience what Ms. Hill made me experience in listening to her album. OutKast changed my ear with their 2003 offering. And Kanye made me feel like it was okay to be myself. These albums were all formational for me.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
The final show of my Kitchen Sessions 2.0 tour in my hometown. I was moved to tears, overwhelmed by the sense of accomplishment in knowing that I had completed a national, independent tour for the second time. And there's still so much more to come.
