About Johnny & the Mongrels
In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.
At nine, my pro musician mom, pulled me onstage during one of her shows. Growing up between Colorado and New Orleans, I was surrounded by musicians, jam sessions, and rehearsals. But that moment sparked something deeper: music felt like my purpose.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular?
JJ Grey & Mofro, OurVinyl, JJ Grey & Mofro | OurVinyl Sessions - Single
Marc Broussard, Carencro Full Length
The Meters, Funkify Your Life: The Meters Anthology
Marc Broussard 'Carencro' for the soulful vocals, JJ Grey 'Brighter Days' for the gritty Southern storytelling, and The Meters 'Rejuvenation for its deep-pocket New Orleans funk. These records capture the soul, groove, and roots that inspire my music

“Drinking With Angels”
“Drinking With Angels” is deeply personal. I wrote it in memory of my friend Jeremy, who passed away from cancer in 2018. It's a song about friendship, loss, and the connections that stay with us long after someone is gone.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
Having Johnny & The Mongrels recognized on the first voting ballot for the 63rd Grammy Awards in six categories was surreal. Coming from our independent roots, it was a powerful reminder that our Swamp Funk and Bayou Soul could reach far beyond home.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band?
Absolutely! We want to take our Swamp Funk & Bayou Soul around the world, play legendary stages, connect with Mongrels-Nation everywhere, and keep making music that brings people together. Most of all, we want this family to keep growing.
