The dark electronic pop project of Toronto's Robert Alfons, TR/ST began in 2010 after Alfons met Austra's Maya Postepski. Comparisons to Depeche Mode and Joy Division began with 2011's debut single, "Candy Walls," which introduced TR/ST's mix of sinuous synth pop and deep vocals. "Bulbform" arrived before the duo's critically acclaimed first album, 2012's Juno-nominated TRST. Singles released in 2013 and early 2014, recorded after Postepski's departure, indicated a more streamlined, dance-inspired direction. Joyland, which incorporated house and acid techno influences, arrived in March 2014. ~ Heather Phares
