About Allison de Groot
Allison De Groot"s approach to banjo is, at its outset, atypical. Rather than the classic "up-picking" style of play, where the fingers pluck up its strings, the Canadian-born musician opts for the "clawhammer" style, where all the fingers on the hand are plucking downward. It's a cornerstone of traditional Americana, and yet, in her time with folk outfit Oh My Darling and musical ventures alongside players like Jerry Douglas, Bruce Molsky, Nic Gareiss, and Rich Ruth, she's managed to shift perceptions on where her instrument best fits.
