About Ayumi Ishito
Ayumi Ishito is a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader from Japan, now based in New York. Her elegant tone and refined phrasing have graced albums by Steve Dalachinsky, Gadadu, Daniel Carter, and others. Ishito released View from the Little Cave, her debut, in 2016, the same year that her Jazz Thieves released Brooklyn Elegy. Two years later, she joined Eighty-Pound Pug and Dalachinsky on Justifiable Homicide. Midnite Cinema, her sophomore album, appeared in 2019. Two years later, Ayumi Ishito & The Spacemen, Vol. 1 (with Kevin Shea and George Draguns) appeared, as did Open Question, Vol. 1, with an improvising quintet that included saxophonist Carter. She co-founded the improvisational collective Playfield, which issued its three-part self-titled debut that year, followed by Stepping Out, Vol. 2 and Magic Heart, Vol. 3, in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Also in 2023, Ayumi Ishito & The Spacemen, Vol. 2 was released. In July 2024, Ishito's long-running quintet released Wondercult Club on 577 Records.
