Artist Biography
Revered for his unorthodox fusions of hip-hop, jazz, and experimental music, producer and rapper Flying Lotus is an undisputed leader of the underground electronic scene.
• After graduating from film school, Lotus—great-nephew of jazz legends Alice and John Coltrane and grandson of singer-songwriter Marilyn McLeod—pivoted to music. In 2004, he landed an internship at Stones Throw Records and began working on his debut album.
• Lotus’ career was jump-started in 2006 when a set of his songs were licensed by Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. That same year, he delivered his debut album, 1983.
• Lotus’ celebrated Cosmogramma arrived in 2010. Laced with sounds from the hospital room of his late mother, the album won two Independent Music Awards.
• In 2012, Lotus began secretly rapping as Captain Murphy. He did not reveal his identity until after the release of his alter ego’s 2012 debut mixtape, Duality.
• As Flying Lotus, he issued 2014’s You’re Dead!. Led by the Grammy-nominated “Never Catch Me,” the album reached the Top 20 in the US.
• Through his independent label Brainfeeder, Lotus made his debut as a director with the 2017 horror film Kuso.
• Lotus’ Flamagra hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums in 2019.
