Dec 5, 2020About Angèle
A leading voice in francophone pop, Angèle matches her sharp musical instincts with a playful wit. That makes perfect sense, since she’s the daughter of singer-songwriter Serge Van Laeken (aka Marka) and actress/comedian Laurence Bibot. Born Angèle Joséphine Aimée Van Laeken in 1995 in Uccle, Belgium, Angèle started out as a busker in Brussels before posting covers and comedy bits online. Sung in French and English, her breezy 2017 debut single “La loi de Murphy” (“Murphy’s Law”) earned platinum sales in both Belgium and France. Loaded with further hits, her 2018 debut album Brol also featured “Tout oublier” (“Forget Everything”), a charismatic duet with her rapper/producer brother, Roméo Elvis. The album achieved double-diamond sales in France and scored a record-breaking 10 nominations at the country’s D6bels Music Awards.
Soon after, Angèle was flexing her comedic flair by voicing characters in the French-language versions of Toy Story 4 and Space Jam: A New Legacy. Her international reach grew with a guest spot on Dua Lipa’s 2020 smash “Fever,” from the expanded edition of the blockbuster album Future Nostalgia. Angèle showcased more emotional complexity on her pandemic-informed 2021 album Nonante-Cinq, before touring with Lipa in 2022. Her earworm dance pop has thrived just as much across other collabs, including her lead vocal turn on the 2024 version of Kavinsky’s synth-pop ballad “Nightcall”—performed at the closing ceremony of that year’s Paris Summer Olympics alongside French indie veterans Phoenix.
Angèle has also released music as a member of Six Women.
