Artist Biography
Playing a high-energy, fuzzy, and jumpy style of garage punk, Chicago's Ethers were formed by members of long-running area bands of a similar ilk, and their self-titled 2018 debut album is a briskly melodic blast of energy not far from territory staked out by bands like Royal Headache.
Ethers formed in 2017, not long after the breakup of Bo Hansen's noise-punk band Heavy Times. He roped in the husband/wife team of guitarist Russell Calderwood, who had been a member of Heavy Times near the end and played in the manic psych group Radar Eyes, and organist Mary McKane (of garage poppers Outer Minds and who also played with Calderwood in the band the Runnies), and drummer Matt Rolin. The group's decade of experience playing shows and making records meant that they hit the ground running and didn't take long to whip up a tightly wound and insistent garage punk sound that was driven by overloaded farfisa organ and as hooky as Buzzcocks album tracks. Soon after forming and getting some songs together, the group recorded an album with engineer Dave Vettraino of the Hecks and sent it to the ubiquitous Mikey Young for his masterful mastering touch. The Chicago label Trouble in Mind was a natural home for the record and they released Ethers' self-titled debut in August of 2018. ~ Tim Sendra
