Mexican rock experimentalists Plastilina Mosh broke out of Monterrey's fabled Avanzada Regia movement of the late ‘90s, spinning catchy fusions of pop, funk, hip-hop, and electronic music infused with surreal, multilingual songwriting. Formed in 1996 by singer/guitarist Jonás González and pianist/studio whiz Alejandro Rosso, Plastilina Mosh were on the vanguard of a playful new era in Mexican rock, rising to prominence alongside bands like Kinky and Jumbo. While their 1997 debut single, “Niño Bomba,” was an underground hit, it received constant rotation on MTV and propelled the group to record their first album, Aqua Mosh. Produced with assistance from members of Café Tacvba and Cypress Hill, the 1998 LP was a huge commercial and critical success, yielding hypnotic hit “Mr. P-Mosh,” which has since become their signature song. Follow-ups such as 2000's Juan Manuel delved into hedonistic dance music, while 2003’s Hola Chicuelos cemented the band's recognizable style of heavy sampling, nerdy Japanese references, and bizarro whimsy. Plastilina Mosh took a hiatus in 2005 and returned to the spotlight three years later with pop-inflected All U Need Is Mosh, followed by sporadic touring. González has since launched solo project Jonaz, scoring another smash with viral electro-norteño single “Noreste Caliente” in 2012.
Members of Plastilina Mosh include, or have included, Alejandro Rosso.
