About DPR IAN
Known for introducing high concepts and recurring characters to his savvy alt-pop, it’s no surprise that Korean Australian artist Christian Yu sees music as a trigger for imagination. That’s been true since he was a child, immersing himself in songs to tease out some deeper meaning.
“When I listen…I just start imagining,” he told Apple Music’s Travis Mills in 2023. “Oftentimes, I’ll just repeat a certain part of the song over and over again, until [I’ve] got the imagination process right.”
Born in Sydney in 1990, Yu christened himself DPR IAN when he co-founded the label Dream Perfect Regime with collaborators DPR LIVE and DPR CREAM in the late 2010s, going on to direct assorted DPR music videos himself. After making his solo debut with the 2020 ballad “So Beautiful,” he explored introspective shades of pop and R&B on 2022’s Moodswings in to Order and built 2023’s Dear Insanity… around a character pulled into an alternate universe that threatens his mental health.
Thanks in part to the hyperreal visuals and elaborate dance choreography of its video, the latter release’s “Don’t Go Insane” went viral and prompted a wide swath of dance challenges. Yet beneath the impressive movement and catchy choruses on the surface, there are always proper characters and story arcs at the heart of Yu’s creations.
