Harley Poe are an acoustic rock band whose raucous songs take an alternately humorous and earnest look at the stuff of horror movies. (Rue Morgue, a magazine that covers horror movies and fiction, named the group's 2012 album Satan, Sex and No Regrets as the year's best LP.) Fusing elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, and indie rock, Harley Poe's music favors banjos, guitars, and minimal percussion while Joseph Whiteford's lyrics celebrate murder, zombies, vampires, cannibalism, and other sinister themes with an edgy but genuine enthusiasm. The band cemented their early reputation with albums like 2006's The Dead and the Naked and 2010's Wretched. Filthy. Ugly. before going on hiatus in 2015. In 2017, Whiteford revived Harley Poe for the album Lost and Losing It, a collection of songs inspired by his divorce, and the group returned as sinister as ever with 2024's Little Joey and the Psychophallic Sex Brain.
