Yirinda is a collaboration between contrabassist, producer, and composer Samuel Pankhurst and Butchulla songman Fred Leone that combines lush, polyrhythmic sonic landscapes with ancient Aboriginal language. Leone, a song and language custodian for the Butchulla people from the Fraser Coast region of Queensland, Australia, teamed up with Pankhurst under the Yirinda moniker in 2020. The duo quickly garnered buzz for their unique fusion of modern technology, Butchulla lore, and native instrumentation. The group issued their eponymous debut album in 2024.
