About Andrzej Panufnik
Andrzej Panufnik was born in Warsaw in 1913 and, along with LutosƗawski, Penderecki, Bacewicz, and Górecki, he emerged as one of the most compelling voices in post-war Polish music. He was a composer whose fierce intelligence and modernist instincts were complemented by a deep spiritual conviction and a burning urge to communicate. Though he survived the Nazi occupation, he lost almost all of his early music in the flames of the Warsaw Uprising. After the war, Poland’s new communist regime banned his Sinfonia Rustica (1948). Panufnik defected to the UK in 1954.
As a British citizen, Panufnik maintained a fierce commitment to Poland. His Sinfonia Sacra (1963), the third of ten surviving symphonies, drew worldwide attention. Arbor Cosmica (1983) reaffirmed his modernist credentials, and his heartfelt Bassoon Concerto (1985) attacked political repression in Poland. He returned to Poland in 1990 as a national hero, and was knighted for his services to British music before his death in 1991.
