Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I have great memories singing in choir & doing solos in high school, but my first professional memory was when Rounder Records came to hear me in person and signed me on the spot. They asked if I wanted to make a record and I thought I was dreaming.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Ali Farka Touré, Talking Timbuktu (with Ry Cooder) Fleetwood Mac, Rumours Super Deluxe Edition Jack White, Blunderbuss Rumours transports me back to a time when I was starting to play, it's unique and very personal. Ali Farka Toure's music is mesmerizing and moody - gives me permission to exhale. Jack White's music is raw and emotional and he's just as great live.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Devil or Fool” I wrote this for my brother, James, who fought addictions most of his life. He loved the song. Then, he surprised me by showing up to one of our shows to hear us play it live, only months before he committed suicide. That night was a gift from him.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? The Kendalls picked my song Serious Doubt for their comeback album. I was in the studio when Jeannie recorded it, but Royce wasn't recording yet, so sang his part just for me so I could hear it! I'll never forget his voice or kindness that day.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I hope to keep writing & recording my own songs, but I'm also starting to enjoy playing some cover tunes at my live shows. I'm thinking about performing/videotaping certain covers that have influenced me over the years. It's good inspiration.
