Artist Biography
b. 6 November 1950, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England. During the 70s, the fiddle player McConville toured with comedian Mike Elliott, then teamed up with Bob Fox (guitar/vocals) to form a duo. McConville then worked briefly with Magna Carta in 1977. During 1979, he got together with Irish singer-songwriter Kieran Halpin to play clubs and festivals. Apart from the domestic circuit, they often performed on the Continent, particularly in Germany. They released two albums before reverting to solo work. In 1983, McConville formed Dab Hand with Jez Lowe and Tom Napper (b. Berkshire, England; tenor banjo, mandolin, guitar, vocals). With only the one album to this line-up’s credit, and insufficient work as a three-piece, McConville left in 1987, again returning to solo performances. In 1988, he releasedStraight From The Shoulder. The excellent follow-upCross The River saw the fiddler establishing himself on the club and festival circuit. The album was produced, arranged and recorded by Chris Newman. In 1994 McConville formed a working duo with Pauline Cato, resulting in several acclaimed albums for the Tomcat label. In 2005 he released Tune For Michael, his first solo album since 1993.
